In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional brass band. It was a joining of two proud (but antiquated and fading) traditions: social aid and pleasure clubs, which dated back over a century to when Black southerners could rarely afford life insurance (the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements), and brass bands (the early predecessors of jazz as we know it), who would follow the funeral procession, playing somber dirges, then bursting into jubilant songs once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social Aid and Pleasure Club decided to assemble a house band, and the ensemble adopted the club's name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Fast-forward to being Grammy-winners and torchbearers for brass band culture the world over, Dirty Dozen has become synonymous with the sound of New Orleans and the spirit of innovation, while deeply honoring the past. Taking the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporating Bebop, Funk, and R&B/Soul, they created something old and new at the same time. This helped spark a brass band renaissance in New Orleans and beyond (their immediate descendants, Rebirth Brass Band – icons in their own right – got their start a few years later by filling in for the Dozen's weekly club night while the latter were on tour), bringing what was previously music from the streets into venues around the globe. Forty-plus years later, across 5 continents, 30+ countries, 12 studio albums, and collaborations with a plethora of artists (from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones), Dirty Dozen is a world-famous music machine, with no sign of letting up.

Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band has been a true New Orleans institution for nearly 40 years. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, with Phil on Sousaphone and Keith on Bass Drum, Rebirth is responsible (following the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, iconic in their own right) for taking brass band music from the streets of traditional second lines and jazz funerals – where the culture was born and continues to thrive – into club venues, festivals, and stages all over the world, establishing it as modern, relevant, and unique dance music. While committed to upholding the deep tradition of New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth instills in the music elements of funk, R&B, and hip-hop, creating a raucous, celebratory sound that has come to define the city.
“Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” Rebirth continues to be New Orleans' cultural ambassadors around the globe, whether seen on HBO's Treme, countless tours, or home in New Orleans for their legendary Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf.
